Upgrading Nightmare

I’m afraid of upgrading software especially if it’s to be used by more than 20 people. Just 10 of them will give me feedbacks such as, “I can’t use this button anymore! It USED TO WORK!” or “Where are all my icons?” (Imagine upgrading Lotus Notes R5 to R6, total nightmare) or “Say, I tried to use <insert niffy new function> and now my data or format is all wrong.” etc.

I can cry, I tell you. All these usually happen in the 1st 2 months. After a while, they get used to the new look but no positive feedback because they feel that improvements can be made by emailing or suggesting certain features that they like to use. Sometimes, it’s just some function that’s not often used but suggested verbally to show that they are quite IT-savvy. There are also users who would say, “Why? It’s ok, right?” and others who would say, “Ok, go ahead but I want the same look.” These are the users who want everything to look the same and any minor colour changes, they would call you early in the morning and say, “Hi, where’s <insert function name>?” The function never changed its position, just its colour and perhaps some icon enhancement.

I’m going through an upgrade from R5 to R7. I can predict that users will be calling everyday to ask about their archives. Lord, please make this transition smooth. Thank you.
